Origami turtles

Did you know that the term ‘origami’, a combination of the words ‘ori’ (to fold) and ‘kami’ (paper), began to be used in 1880?

Previously, it was called Orikata, meaning folded shapes. Folding was a vital skill for aristocrats and high-ranking soldiers in Japan. Several styles of formal gift/ritual wrappings were developed for things such as money, poetry, and fans.
